Obama Endorses Obama

By Paul Fidalgo, Near Earth News

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. – In a move sure to make political waves, the presidential candidacy of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., earned the endorsement of one of the Democratic Party’s most popular and influential leaders, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Sen. Obama’s endorsement has been one the most sought after in the hotly contested primary battle between Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Obama, as Sen. Obama has managed to build a movement of young people, independents, and disaffected voters who now flock to his events by the thousands.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of such a distinguished and attractive figure in American politics,” Sen. Obama said in a statement, “I look forward to working with Barack to communicate our campaign’s message of hope and change to the people of Pennsylvania and across the country.”

On his endorsement of the Illinois senator, Sen. Obama said, “This has been an extremely difficult choice for me to make. Senator Clinton has been – and continues to be – a good friend, someone to whom I am greatly indebted for showing me the ropes in the U.S. Senate. She has been a champion of human rights and is obviously a very capable and competent legislator. Were she to be the nominee, she would have my full support.”

Obama continued, “But these times call for a new way of thinking about politics, and after much prayer and contemplation, I have decided that Senator Obama has the talent, the judgment, and the winning – almost blinding – smile that can finally unite this country to tackle its most serious problems. I am proud, therefore, to give my support to Barack Obama for president.”

Sen. Obama’s endorsement of Sen. Obama comes at a critical time as the race begins to turn on the votes of superdelegates. It is his second such backing by a superdelegate, coming right on the heels of the backing of Gov. Bill Richardson, D-N.M., fueling a growing sense of momentum for his candidacy.

Sen. Clinton had no public comment on the news, but in an attempt to siphon off positive media coverage from the Illinois senator, Sen. Clinton announced the double-endorsement of Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell. Rendell, who has already been very vocal in his backing of Mrs. Clinton, said in a press conference today, “I believe so strongly in Senator Clinton’s ability to lead this nation, that I am announcing my super-double-endorsement of her candidacy. I really, really think she should be president, and if you want to get an idea of how much, think of a regular endorsement – the kind that Senator Obama normally gets – and multiply it by, like, thirty. No, fifty. That’s how bad I want her to be president. It’s crazy.”

The DNC had no comment as to how much more weight should be given to Gov. Rendell’s superdelegate vote, considering the enormity of his endorsement, though it is likely to result in a credentials battle at the convention, and Sen. Clinton has vowed to make sure Gov. Rendell’s vote “counts as many times as befits his obviously strong feelings.”

Two major figures in the Democratic race have yet to announce their preferences – former Vice President Al Gore and former senator John Edwards. Mr. Gore has maintained that he will not publicly back any candidate, but sources close to Sen. Edwards, who was defeated in his own bid for the nomination, say that he is considering endorsing “Fuck You All.”
